2021 Lexus LS vs. 2021 Mercedes S-Class

Overview

If you're in the market for a luxury sedan in 2021, chances are that the Lexus LS and the Mercedes S-Class sedans are on your test-drive list. If you're trying to narrow things down, take a few minutes to consider some of the differences. These are both quality vehicles, but luxury sedans are an investment; and there are some differences it's worth knowing about as you make a decision.

Exterior (Overall Design)

If you look at the Mercedes, one of the first things you'll notice is that it simply looks like a Mercedes. There's no mistaking that grille or the styling that has inspired some to call it a "land yacht." This is a lot of vehicle, and it's certainly imposing. The Lexus LS has a much more sporty look. Particularly in this 2021 design, Lexus has married luxury with a swooping, sporty look that is definitely more eye-catching. It has a 21st-century vibe about it that doesn't stop it from also looking luxurious.

Interior Features

Both of these vehicles use premium materials on the inside, and it shows. Both are available with leather or cloth interiors standard, depending on your tastes, and a variety of lovely woodwork trims. The surprise, at least to us, is that the Mercedes runs about $30,000 more than the Lexus, yet offers only three standard interior materials: black, brown, and macchiato leather. If you want one of the 8 other options, like Nappa leather or upholstery, you have to upgrade. Meanwhile, the LS offers you 13 different standard interior material choices, from black stitched leather to palomino leather to white quilt-stitch and more. For space, the Mercedes has marginally more head and legroom in the backseat, but not enough that most people will notice. What we did notice, however, was the way that extra inch came at the expense of cargo space. You'll get 16.9 inches on the Lexus and only 12.9 on the Mercedes, despite the fact the Mercedes is slightly longer and taller than the Lexus. We can't help thinking of this as an issue with careful design. As a driver (or a passenger), you'll enjoy HD radio, bucket seats, leather steering wheel, and many other comfort features standard on both sedans. However, with the LS you get a few extras as standard that aren't available on the Mercedes, like a hands-free liftgate, A/C for your backseat passengers, and a heated steering wheel.

Engines

The ending numbers are pretty close when it comes to horsepower. The Lexus has a 3.4 L Twin-Turbo V6 that generates 416 hp while the Mercedes gets 429 hp from a 3.0L Turbo Inline 6. But there's a significant difference in torque. Where the Mercedes can only manage 384 lb-ft off the line, the LS is ready to send you into space with 442 lb-ft. The Mercedes offers a 9-speed automatic transmission, while the Lexus has a 10-speed.

Safety Features

Both sedans offer a lot of the standard modern safety features, like stability control, blind-spot monitoring, a full suite of airbags, backup camera, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and more. There are just a few things you can't get with the Mercedes, like a rear-parking aid.
