2023 Lexus ES vs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Overview

Luxury vehicles continue to improve, and the models in the Lexus and Mercedes-Benz lineups are no exception. Take a closer look at two of the flagship luxury sedans in these lines — the ES and the C-Class.

Trim Levels

The ES is a midsize sedan in the Lexus lineup that was one of the automaker's earliest releases. Although it's been around for more than three decades, it's changed substantially over the years. The 2023 model comes in five trim levels: ES 350, Luxury, Ultra Luxury, F Sport Design, and F Sport Handling. Standard exterior features on the base trim include a sunroof, keyless entry, and a set of 17-inch wheels. You can also get upgrades like larger wheels, automatic wipers, performance-tuned suspension dampers, and unique trim. If you want a sportier version, consider the F Sport Design. It boasts a rear spoiler, a sport-tuned suspension, and 19-inch wheels. The 2023 C-Class fits into the same segment as the ES, although Mercedes-Benz is offering a new trim level this year — the AMG 43 — that's focused on performance. Other trims include the Premium, Exclusive, and Pinnacle.

Power Beneath the Hood

Lexus buyers can choose from two powertrain options. The first is a 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 302 horsepower. It works with an eight-speed automatic transmission. If you want to save on fuel, consider the hybrid powertrain, which uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The combined output is 215 horsepower, while a continuously variable transmission sends power to the front wheels. Most C-Class models share a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 255 horsepower. It also has mild hybrid functionality with a 48-volt motor beneath its hood. The AMG 43 trim has its own hand-built 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 402 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

Upscale Tech and Safety Features

Both models come well-equipped on the tech and safety sides. Each includes a suite of active driver aids with features like forward-collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The base ES 350 also boasts a premium 10-speaker sound system, wireless smartphone integration, and an 8-inch touchscreen to keep you entertained and connected. The Lexus ES is certainly an appealing model in its segment, beating out some of the top-rated rivals in performance, styling, and premium features.
