New Jersey requires car emissions testing to comply with the National Clean Air Standards set out in 1990. Emissions testing measures the amounts of dangerous chemicals emitted by a vehicle to ensure it complies with these standards. The testing procedure is set out and administered by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ-MVC). We’d like to tell your more about how this procedure works in Englewood, NJ.

Which Vehicles Require an Emissions Test?

Testing became a requirement on January 1st, 2009. The New Jersey law requires that all vehicles manufactured from 2009 onwards must have an emissions test every two years. The test requirements vary depending on your vehicle’s make, model, and year. The test must be performed by the second anniversary of the previous test.

The NJ-MVC doesn’t send emissions test reminder letters, and all drivers must ensure they have a new test before the old one expires. Driving in New Jersey with an expired inspection sticker can result in a $200.00 fine and imprisonment for 30 days.

Where Are the Tests Performed?

The NJ-MVC has a network of state-certified and private testing venues. If you book an inspection at a state-certified facility, there is no charge. Private testing venues like gas stations and auto repair shops can set their fee for the test. The usual fee for testing at a private facility is $30 to $60.

How Does the Test Work?

Most vehicles manufactured since 1996 have an Onboard Diagnostic system (OBD). Your OBD will be connected to the testing center’s diagnostic system to provide a quick and easy diagnosis. Your car’s OBD will provide a full report on the level of your car’s emissions. If this report meets the requirements for the California Low Emission Vehicle Program which operates in New Jersey, you’ll receive a smog certificate.

If your vehicle doesn’t meet the required standard, a red emissions failure sticker is placed on your windshield. The OBD report will highlight the repairs that must be completed to pass the test. You’ll need to have any repairs completed at an Emissions Repair Facility (ERF). Once the repairs are complete, your vehicle will need to be retested.

Exemptions

The NJ-MVC recognizes several exemptions for smog certification. New and used vehicles that are less than five years old, classic and historic cars, gasoline-powered cars manufactured before 1995, and electric vehicles don’t require testing. You can also visit your nearest NJ-MVC office to apply for an exemption. If they grant your exemption, your vehicle will no longer require a smog certificate.
