Your driver’s license is valid for four years, and then it needs to be renewed. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) will send you a reminder that it’s renewal time. As there’ve been changes to the NJ MVC’s rules, we thought it would be helpful to explain how to renew your license when you live in Englewood, NJ.

Documents You Need

Before starting the renewal process, you need to gather your identification. You will need proof of citizenship, your Social Security number, and proof of residency in New Jersey. Proof of citizenship can be your passport, certificate of naturalization, certificate of citizenship, foreign passport, or birth certificate. As proof of residency, they accept your current New Jersey licenses, a non-driver New Jersey identity card, or official mail with your address.

You’ll also need your Social Security card or a W-2 or 1099 form with the number. Once you’ve gathered your documents, you usually have three different ways to apply for your renewal.

Renew Online

The NJ MVC added online renewal as an option in 2020, and it’s become the most widely used and quickest way to renew your license. To use this method, you’ll need your previous license, your Social Security number, email address, a printer to print your receipt, and a credit card for payment. If you go online on the NJ MVC website, they guide you through the entire process.

If your address has changed, you have to update that first before making the application. Once you’ve completed the online application, you’ll be able to print out the interim license you receive and keep it with your expiring license. Your new license will be posted in 10 to 20 working days.

Renew in Person

The first step to renewing in person involves booking an appointment with the NJ MVC online. Before you go to their offices, you’ll need proof of your address and $24 in cash, check, or credit card for your renewal. You’ll also need enough identification to satisfy the 6 points requirement. Different pieces of identification carry different weights, and the NJ MVC lists the accepted identification on its website.

When you arrive at your appointment, you’ll need to complete the Auto License Application and have your photo taken. The NJ MVC doesn’t issue licenses in person anymore; they will mail them to you.

Renew by Mail

If you have the option to renew by mail, the NJ MVC will post you the “Skip the Trip” package. To apply by mail, you will need certified copies of your two pieces of identification, including your expiring license, birth certificate, or other identity documents. You will also need a certified copy of proof of address and a completed Auto License Application.

Post these documents to the NJ MVC head office in Trenton, NJ, and you’ll receive your license in about 10 days.
